A small puddle under an RV sink is annoying. A freshwater leak hidden behind a wall, under the shower, or beneath the floor can turn into swollen wood, soft flooring, mold, and a repair that costs far more than the original fitting. RV freshwater leak detection is about finding the source early, before a drip becomes interior damage or a trip-ending problem.
Freshwater leaks are often easier to locate than they first appear. The key is to determine whether the leak happens only when the water pump is running, only when you are connected to city water, or only when the fresh tank is full. That one detail narrows the search quickly.
Know the Signs of a Freshwater Leak
Not every leak leaves a visible stream. Many RV plumbing leaks start as a slow seep at a fitting, faucet connection, water heater line, or toilet valve. Pay attention to changes that do not have an obvious explanation.
Common warning signs include:
The water pump cycles briefly when no faucet or appliance is being used.
You smell damp carpet, wet wood, or mildew inside a cabinet or storage compartment.
Flooring feels soft, vinyl has lifted, or cabinet bases are discolored.
Water appears below the RV after using the plumbing, even though the gray or black tanks are closed.
Your fresh tank drains faster than normal or drips when parked.
A pump that cycles on and off with all fixtures closed is one of the clearest signs of a leak on the pressurized side of the system. It can also point to a faulty pump check valve, so it does not automatically mean water is running inside the RV. Still, it deserves a careful inspection.
RV Freshwater Leak Detection Starts With Pressure
Your RV has two main ways to supply water: the onboard water pump pulls water from the fresh tank, while a city-water connection supplies pressurized water from an outside source. Testing each method separately helps identify where the trouble is.
Test with the Water Pump
Fill the fresh tank enough to run the pump. Turn off every faucet, make sure the toilet is not running, and confirm the water heater is filled before operating the system. Let the pump build pressure, then listen.
A healthy system should remain quiet after pressure builds. If the pump comes on every few minutes without anyone using water, there is pressure loss somewhere. Check visible plumbing first: under kitchen and bathroom sinks, behind access panels, around the toilet, near the water pump, and at the water heater connections.
Use a dry paper towel around fittings and PEX connections. A slow leak may not form a drop right away, but it will show on the towel. Check the floor beneath each area with your hand as well. Water can travel along a line or cabinet frame before it becomes visible.
Test on City Water
Turn the water pump off before connecting to city water. Use a pressure regulator at the hose connection. West Texas water pressure can vary, and excessive pressure can damage fittings, valves, and plastic plumbing components.
With city water connected, inspect the same areas again. If a leak occurs on city water but not with the pump, the issue may involve higher incoming pressure, the city-water inlet, a cracked fitting, or a line that only leaks under stronger pressure. If the pump runs normally but city water causes a problem, do not assume the system is safe just because the pump test passed.
Never leave city water connected unattended when you leave the RV. A fitting can fail while you are gone, and a continuous water supply can cause serious damage in a short time.
Check the Places Leaks Usually Hide
Start where water is used or where plumbing changes direction. These locations are more likely to have loose connections, worn seals, cracked plastic, or damage from vibration and freezing.
Under the kitchen sink, look at the faucet supply lines, filter housing, sprayer hose, and drain area. The drain is not part of the freshwater system, but water from a leaking drain can look similar. Run both hot and cold water and feel every connection while the faucet is on.
At the bathroom, inspect the sink connections, shower faucet, shower hose, and the wall behind the shower controls if access is available. A shower leak often shows up in an adjacent storage bay or beneath the floor rather than inside the shower itself. Check the outside shower too. Its valves, hose connection, and back-of-wall plumbing are often overlooked.
At the toilet, look closely at the water supply line and the valve behind the toilet. A toilet that slowly refills after flushing may have an internal valve issue, while water at the base may indicate a seal, fitting, or cracked toilet component. Do not ignore a small wet spot around the toilet. That area can damage flooring fast.
At the water heater, remove the exterior access cover once the unit is cool. Look for damp fittings, streaks, corrosion, or water around the pressure-relief valve. A relief valve may drip occasionally during heating, but repeated dripping can indicate excessive system pressure or a valve that is not sealing correctly. Water heater bypass valves and connections are also common trouble spots after winterizing or de-winterizing.
Finally, inspect the water pump compartment and any low-point drain valves. A loose pump strainer, cracked pump housing, or drain valve that is not fully closed can cause pressure loss. These areas may be behind a panel, under a bed, or inside a storage compartment depending on the RV layout.
Separate a Tank Leak From a Plumbing Leak
A fresh tank leak behaves differently from a pressurized plumbing leak. If water drips under the RV only when the fresh tank is full or nearly full, the tank, fill line, overflow, drain valve, or fitting near the tank may be the source.
Park on level ground and fill the tank partway. Look underneath with a flashlight before and after filling. If water appears near the tank without the pump running, focus on the tank area. A cracked tank or failed fitting may leak only at a certain fill level, which is why an empty tank inspection can miss it.
If water comes out of the overflow while filling, that may be normal. If it continues draining after you stop filling or leaves a steady stream while parked, inspect the fill connection and overflow routing. Do not plug an overflow line to stop a drip. The tank needs a way to vent as it fills and empties.
Use Simple Tools Before Opening Walls
You do not need to tear into cabinets at the first sign of moisture. Start with a flashlight, paper towels, a headlamp, and a moisture meter if you have one. A moisture meter can help compare a dry cabinet panel with a suspicious area near a fixture, but it is a clue, not a final diagnosis.
Food coloring can help with certain cases. Add a small amount to the fresh tank only if you plan to flush the system thoroughly afterward, or use it in a toilet bowl to check for water movement. For most freshwater line leaks, visual inspection and pressure testing are more reliable.
Be careful with leak-stop additives and temporary tape repairs. Some products can create trouble in pumps, valves, filters, and water heaters. Tape may slow a drip long enough to get parked safely, but it is not a dependable repair for a pressurized RV water line.
When to Shut the Water Off and Call for Service
Turn off the water pump and disconnect city water immediately if you find active water inside a wall, under flooring, near electrical equipment, or around the power converter. Also shut the system down if the pump runs continuously, a line has split, or water is entering a storage bay with wiring or insulation.
A visible loose fitting may be a straightforward repair. A hidden leak is different. Prevent the Next Freshwater Leak
Most freshwater leaks come down to vibration, aging seals, high water pressure, freeze damage, or fittings disturbed during routine work. Use a quality pressure regulator on city water, inspect plumbing after rough roads, and check fittings after winterizing, de-winterizing, or replacing filters and appliances.
Open cabinets and access panels a few times each season. A two-minute inspection after a trip can catch a damp connection before it reaches the floor. If something looks wet, test it while the pump is pressurized instead of waiting for the next outing.
